Two serious shootings in Nonthaburi Province between 7 and 10 August 2026 have renewed attention on Thailand’s comparatively high level of civilian firearm ownership and the associated security risks. This Security Update examines the Debsirin Nonthaburi School mass shooting and the fatal shooting of the Nonthaburi PAO president, placing both incidents within the wider context of Thailand’s estimated 10.3 million civilian-held firearms, gun crime, firearms legislation and previous major shooting incidents.
The assessment finds no evidence of a connected campaign or increased targeting of foreigners, with the principal risk to foreign workers remaining incidental exposure to armed disputes, criminal incidents or rare mass-casualty events. It also provides a future outlook together with proportionate risk-control and recovery measures for organisations and foreign personnel operating in Thailand.
