This assessment examines developments in the Iran conflict from 31 July to 7 August 2026, including continued Iranian restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz, Iran–Oman negotiations over a temporary shipping arrangement, the postponement of renewed large-scale U.S. strikes, Iranian threats against Gulf critical infrastructure, renewed Houthi activity and continuing internal repression. The assessment finds that a comprehensive settlement remains unlikely in the near term, although a temporary Hormuz arrangement is possible, while U.S. blockade pressure and strategic advantages continue to weigh more heavily on Iran despite emerging constraints on U.S. precision-munition inventories.
